Sports players and fans are being targeted in a campaign to get more sperm donors to help couples struggling to conceive.
The National Gamete Donation Trust wants to increase the number of new donors in the UK to about 500, from its latest figure of 384.
Leaflets and posters are being sent to 30 sports clubs and venues in the pilot area of Greater Manchester.

384 is that all there is?
Hope it take it to 500 thats still not a lot.
How many times can one donor donate?
do they keep track on how many times children have been produced?
More donors needed lots more 5,000 would be a nice number.
becoz the law changed re donor anominity i think thats why alot of men have choosen not to donate even sum men who where on the donor reg took themselfs off it .
Unfortunately the number of donors in the UK is very low and donors are only allowed to donate through clinics for a maximum of 10 live births. This means many women have to wait a long time to get treatment with donated sperm unless they have their own donor.
Many of the donors who donate through clinics also donate through websites, this means that by using donated sperm from a clinic your child could have more than 10 siblings, unfortunately there is no way of controlling this. However using a known donor who is willing to stay in contact with the child decreases the chance of them being a profuse donor.
Yes the number of donors has decreased since the change in the anominity law which now means that donor conceived children can now retreive identifiable details about the donor when they reach 18 and make contact with them.
This change in the anonimity law is a real benefit for those children who spend years wondering about their identity. However this new law has many disadvantages aswell, it has certainly discouraged donors especially those who never wish to hear from any children they have given rise to. This law is also a concern for many women using donated sperm as their child may end up contacting a man in 18 years who they actually know very little about other than their hair and eye colour.
This is why Pride Angels believe using a known donor is the best option for all involved, recipients, future children and donor included.
Recipients are able to choose their donor not just on appearances but also their personality by actually meeting them. The donor is able to donate to a woman or couple who they feel confident will bring up the child in a happy home. Most importantly the child will be able to know of their identity from an early age with the possibility of occasional contact or even regular contact in the case of a co-parenting situation.
